Fighting boredom.

A lot of fighter pilots talk of the boredom on long escort missions where no EA were encountered. What sort of things did you do to occupy you're mind?

Maybe you tend to forget those long missions in the Mustangs to Schweinfurt, Regensburg, Pennemunde and Berlin and how restricted you were in that small P-51 cockpit for more than six hours on the longest missions, but I can't say I was ever bored. After a couple of 'milkruns' not seeing any bandits you might tend to do so, but there was always the discipline of staying in position, scanning the skies for the enemy, checking your fuel supply and other things vital to getting home again. Many times you came back with stiff legs and a tired butt, but having to be alert for that length of time took a big drag on your adrenaline but I don't recall any boredom. I think my longest mission was my last one, to Peenemunde, where the V2s were being manufactured. It was beautiful flying along the Frisian Islands up to Norway and Sweden, seeing the fiords from 25,000 feet and then down to the target area.I sweated that one somewhat, however, as my new P-51D developed a prop-seal leak and the oil on my windscreen limited my visibility on the way home. Lucky we didn't encounter any German planes as I would have been greatly disadvantaged. I think that trip was 6 + hours. -- punchy.
