The Schweinfurt Raid

Postby PunchyPowell » Wed May 04, 2005 7:21 pm

First, let me say there were a number of Schweinfurt raids, the first on August 17, 1943, about one month before the 352nd flew its first combat mission. The Schweinfurt/Regensburg raids resulted in heavy bomber losses. The 352nd did participate in the Oct. 14th Schweinfurt raid, but even with belly tanks they could only go about 250 miles from Britain and B-17s againsuffered heavy losses, some 60 bombers. It wasn't until Feb 2, 1944 that Schweinfurt was again a target. Then again on March 24, with the 352nd providing penetration and exit support. On 12 and 13 of April/44, Schweinfurt was one of several bomber targets. The 352nd, switching over to Mustangs about that time, did not participate on the 12th but did on the 13th. Schweinfurt was not a target for months after that as our bombers were making strategic missions in prepration for D-Day. Sometime after D-Day there were probably other missions targeting Schweinfurt butby then our Mustangs could provide escort all the way and the bomber losses dropped dramatically. .
